The U.S. Constitution authorizes Congress to establish laws to encourage and promote innovation. The patent law system in the U.S. exists to offer a system to protect innovators of “novel inventions.”
Today, it’s complex and—more than a few leaders say—overly protective of established industries to the detriment of true innovators. We’ll save that debate for another day.
